It was a long night at the 98th Academy Awards ceremony, dedicated to the last year’s cinema, in which protagonists, directors and industry insiders gathered for the awarding of the industry’s most prestigious prizes. Dominating the evening were One Battle After Another and Sinners. The latter, with a record 16 nominations took four wins, including Michael B. Jordan’s for Best Actor in a Leading Role, in line with predictions. Collecting the award, the actor thanked his colleagues, everyone who made this moment possible, and also his family, recounting the moving journey that brought him this far.
The best film is Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which also took the award for best director. As expected, best lead actress was Jessie Buckley for Hamnet, who on Mother’s Day in England dedicated the award to mothers, in honor of her character. The surprise was Marty Supreme, which despite 9 nominations did not get any awards.
Best Supporting Actress is Amy Madigan for Weapons, while Best Supporting Actor is Sean Penn for One Battle After Another, an award picked up by last year’s winner, Kieran Culkin. The best casting category, reintroduced after 24 years, was won by Cassandra Kulukundis for One Battle After Another, while the awards for best costume and best makeup and hairstyling went to Frankenstein, Kate Hawley and Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey, respectively. The best international film is Sentimental Value.
Paul Thomas Anderson took the award for best nonoriginal screenplay with One Battle After Another, and Ryan Coogler the best original screenplay with Sinners. Best sound was won by Gareth John, Al Nelson, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, Gary Rizzo and Juan Peralta for F1, best original score is by Ludwig Göransson for Sinners, and best original song is Golden by KPop Demon Hunters.
